Laser Gum Reshaping in Suwanee

When people think of an aesthetically perfect smile, straight white teeth are usually the features that come to mind, but they often forget that the shape and size of one’s gums can affect the appearance of the smile as well. Laser gum reshaping, or laser gum contouring, is a dental procedure that removes excess gum tissue, or adds extra gum tissue depending on the patient’s oral situation.

This oral procedure works to shape the gums to meet the patient’s preference in order to enhance the appearance of their smile. Because this is a procedure based on aesthetic purposes, laser gum reshaping is performed by one of our cosmetic dentists at Suwanee Family Dentistry.

What to Expect with Laser Gum Contouring

Laser gum contouring is a routine surgery, with minimal risks, but it does require a recovery period in order to make sure you heal completely. Below is more information about the procedure and the recovery process.

Procedure

Although the laser gum reshaping procedure is a surgery, it is a routine procedure that takes place in the cosmetic dental office rather than in a surgical hospital setting. We’re able to handle it all in-office at Suwanee Family Dentistry, so you don’t have to worry about multiple appointments or juggling different offices. It usually lasts between one to two hours. The procedure starts with a local anesthetic to numb the gums that will be reshaped. If the gums are too large, your licensed dentist will remove the extra gum tissue using a soft tissue laser. Sutures are occasionally required depending on the severity of the incision, but are not as common as they once were when scalpels were used instead of lasers. If the gums are too small, your dentist will add gum tissue onto the gum line using tissue taken from the pallet of the mouth.

With both procedures, contouring or grafting, this can be performed for a single tooth, multiple teeth or the entire gum line. You’ll receive a personalized treatment plan, so be sure to speak with your dentist about what’s right for you at your initial consultation.

Recovery

Although most patients report the procedure causes little to no pain because of the precision of the laser technology, pain still tends to occur after the anesthetic wears off a few hours after the procedure. Taking time to recover is crucial in order to allow the gums to heal completely. The recovery period for laser gum reshaping surgery can vary from a few days to a few weeks depending on the extremity of the reshaping that took place.

After the procedure takes place, it is recommended that you take an over-the-counter pain medication. A cold compress can be used on the outside of the mouth to soothe the gums as well. Similar to wisdom teeth surgery, after your laser gum reshaping you should stick to eating soft foods. These will be easier on your newly formed gums and will lessen the possibility of scratching and irritating the gums. You may also want to adjust your brushing and flossing routine to decrease irritation. Your dental team can give you specific instructions for this. If pain and swelling worsen, contact our office and we can decide together if you need to come back in for us to assess the situation.
